Types of Chess Tournaments

Rapid Chess Tournament

Time Control:  10 to 60 minutes sometimes with a small time increment per move (e.g. 10 seconds).  

According to FIDE, time controls for each player in rapid game are more than 10 minutes but less than 60 minutes. Rapid chess can be played with or without time increments for each move. 

Standard Chess Tournament

Time Control: Range from 30 minutes to 90 minutes with no increments or increments of 30 seconds

Classical is the longest format of chess with a standard time control: 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by an additional 30 minutes for the remainder of the game, with a time increment of 30 seconds per move starting from move one; which could last for hours over several days.

Blitz Chess Tournament

Time Control: 3 and 5 minutes per player sometimes with small increment. Blitz is fast and furious, a chess game that has a fast time control.
